Teaching Philosophy

At Opus 1, our teaching philosophy centers on the belief that a strong foundation in fundamental keyboard skills and music theory is essential for a student’s long-term success and enjoyment in piano playing. We are committed to fostering a deep understanding of these core elements, which we believe will empower students to achieve their full musical potential. When students have developed a strong foundation, we can cater our curriculum to help them reach their personal musical goals. Core Principles of Our Teaching Philosophy 1:Solid Fundamentals •Technique and Skill Development: We prioritize the development of proper technique, including hand and body position, finger strength, and coordination. Mastery of these fundamentals ensures that students can tackle increasingly complex pieces with ease and confidence. •Repertoire Building: Our curriculum includes carefully selected repertoire that gradually introduces students to various styles and genres, reinforcing their technical skills and musical expression. 2: Comprehensive Music Theory •Understanding Music Structure: We emphasize the importance of music theory as a foundation for interpreting and performing music. Students will learn to read and understand musical notation, key signatures, time signatures, and rhythmic patterns. These concepts will be introduced gradually based on student level and comprehension and will be applied practically to the music they are learning and practicing. 3: Holistic Musical Education: •Ear Training and Sight Reading: We incorporate ear training and sight-reading exercises to develop students' ability to recognize musical patterns and improve their improvisational skills. •Creative Exploration: Encouraging creativity through improvisation and composition helps students connect with music on a personal level and explore their own musical ideas. 4: Passion and Enjoyment: •Fostering a Love for Music: While we focus on strong fundamentals and theory, we also strive to instill a love for music in our students. We believe that a genuine passion for music is the key to perseverance and continued growth. •Community and Lifelong Learning: We strive to create a musical community amongst our students where they can support and encourage one another. Our hope is that our students can experience the wonderful human connection that music making creates. We hope to inspire a lifelong appreciation and curiosity for music, encouraging students to continue exploring and enjoying music beyond their time at our studio. 5:Personalized Learning Experience: •Individual Needs and Goals: Each student is unique, and we tailor our teaching approach to meet their individual needs, interests, and goals. Regular assessments and feedback ensure that instruction remains relevant and effective. •Building Confidence and Independence: Our goal is to nurture students' confidence and independence as musicians. We aim to develop their ability to practice effectively, set personal goals, and take ownership of their learning journey.

Studio Policy

Studio policies are to ensure that students, parents and instructor are all of the same understanding of expectations and requirements. This will help ensure that the studio operates smoothly and provides the best learning environment for students. Thank you for taking the time to consider joining our studio and reviewing it's policies: 1. Students are expected to arrive on time for their weekly schedule lessons with all their materials. 2. Students will treat everybody with respect - any problematic behavior will be addressed with parents and may lead to further action. 3. Tuition is based on 38 lessons spread over a 40 week schedule from September 2024 - June 2025. If students enroll after September, tuition will be pro-rated. Tuition payment will be spread throughout 5 payments on first day of September, November, January, March, May. 4. Tuition covers weekly private lessons, monthly group sessions, audio/video recording progress of students, recitals and preparation of lesson plans and personalized curriculums. Materials such as method books and scores are NOT included - students can either reimburse Opus 1 for the cost or purchase their own materials in a timely manner. 5. There will be two weeks of flex lessons throughout the year to provide makeup lessons for student illness or family emergencies. There will be no refund for missed lessons. If we need to cancel a lesson, a makeup will be scheduled promptly. 6. Students are expected to maintain consistent practice between lessons. Progress at any instrument is achieved through consistent exposure to the instrument. We encourage parents to help guide younger students in their practice and expect advanced students to preserve consistent time daily for practice. This ensures that students are making progress, continuing to learn and expanding their understanding and appreciation for music.
